How old is the learner?
Age is only a starting point. It is always fine to choose an easier or harder set.
These are selected teaching examples, not a complete scheme or an assessment of a child’s level. Schools may teach curriculum content in a different order.
How the words were chosen
The sets follow the spelling patterns and examples in the Department for Education’s English programmes of study and spelling appendix. This guidance applies to England. Example words are grouped to help children notice a shared sound, letter pattern, prefix or ending before trying to recall them.
